Beating the After Holiday Blues

We all feel it- the negative feelings after the Christmas tree is put away, the weather gets worse, and the sun STILL isn’t shining. Yes, this is the post-holiday blues. We as a society experience this together after the anxiety of getting ready for the holidays. Part of these blues is the lack of energy after we spent it all buying presents, going caroling, visiting all of those darn relatives, etc. It certainly does not help that the sun seems to be resting as well. So what can you do to help with those holiday blues?

*Exercise! It is certainly harder in the winter months, but exercise has been proven to lead to large mood improvements. Take a walk in the snow, find an indoor pool, or get some indoor exercise equipment.

*Make a coffee date with a friend. Not only does this get you out of your usual routine, it helps you feel connected with another person, which can do wonders for your mood.

*Look at pictures of cute animals. I personally am a member of a few Facebook groups which post pictures of adorable pets. It may not do much to lift your mood, but every little bit helps.

*Do something nice for someone else. A small act of kindness will not only make someone else’s day, it will make yours as well.

Still can’t get over those blues? A counselor would be happy to walk you through the process of finding the sunshine again. Don’t hesitate to call and find someone to help!
